  1. The SAN DIEGO SODA WORKS is one of only two Soda Water Manufacturers that are listed in the 1887-88 Maxwell's Directory, as follows:
San Diego Soda Works, G. Gaedke & Co., L bet Twenty-second and Twenty-Third

There is another variant of this Hutchinson “Hutch” style soda bottle with the proprietor’s names (G. Gaedke and A. Siefke) embossed on the bottle. In addition, there are several other types and sizes of the San Diego Soda Works bottles that come in a crown-top, as opposed to the tooled blob top. I will post a few more pictures of these different bottle variations over the weekend.

  3. When did this company go out of business? More specifically, when were the crown top bottles no longer used?
    Is this you Lance?

  4. What I do know is that Gustav H. Gaedke sold the San Diego Soda Works in 1920, and just two years later he died at the age of 81.

I found an example of an early machine-made crown top soda that was in teens to 1920's context. It was likely the very last variant manufactured for this brand.

In addition to producing soda, G. Gaedke & Co also manufactured sarsaparilla, ginger ale, champagne cider, iron water and mineral water....while in business at the L Street location (between 22d & 23d).

  6. I've searched the 1887-88, 1889-90, 1897 and 1905, 1912, 1915 and 1917-1920 San Diego County Directories and did not see a soda works listed. After a quick Google search I did come across machine made Escondido Soda Wors bottle in an aqua color. I would estimate it to be in the 1917 to early 1920's age range. If you happen to know the name of the proprietor I can try looking through the directories with that as well.
